Find a Duplicate IP Address on an AV Network
Use address ownership records, neighbor observations and controlled isolation to locate conflicting projectors or gateways without disrupting a whole rack.
To diagnose a duplicate IP address, correlate the suspected address with device identities and switch ports, then isolate one claimant in an approved window. An occasional ping reply is not proof of unique ownership. Preserve the original settings and DHCP records so that fixing one endpoint does not move the conflict to another address.
Why the symptom looks intermittent
A controller may alternate between a working projector and an unrelated gateway if its local neighbor information changes. A web page can show the wrong vendor, commands can stop after a laptop connects, or a problem can appear only after a lease renewal. These observations suggest a conflict but also fit other failures, so record the identity evidence before assigning a cause.
RFC 5227 describes IPv4 address conflict detection using ARP. Not every embedded AV product exposes useful warnings, and a silent endpoint is not necessarily absent. Use the protocol behavior as evidence alongside the venue's inventory, not as a promise that every device will protect itself automatically.
Collect three independent identities
Record the suspected IP address, its observed MAC address on the relevant local segment, and the physical asset attached to the switch port. A routed client generally sees the gateway's link layer identity, so collect neighbor evidence on the endpoint VLAN or ask the network owner to inspect the appropriate router and switch tables.
| Evidence | What it establishes | What it cannot establish alone |
|---|---|---|
| DHCP lease | Server allocated an address to an identifier | No static device is using it |
| Neighbor table | Current local IP to MAC association | Permanent ownership |
| Switch port record | Location associated with a MAC | Correct application configuration |
| Device network page | Device's configured address | Uniqueness across the whole VLAN |
For Windows, collect a read only snapshot before clearing anything:
Get-NetNeighbor -AddressFamily IPv4
Get-NetIPConfigurationIsolate the claimants carefully
- Ask the network owner whether the address belongs to a lease, reservation or manual allocation.
- Check the label and settings on the expected device, including the wired rather than wireless interface.
- If another MAC has appeared, have the network owner locate its switch port.
- During an approved interruption, disconnect one suspected endpoint and repeat the same harmless status check.
- Reconnect it after collecting evidence; do not leave unidentified equipment offline.
- Assign a valid unique address through the agreed allocation method and update affected controller destinations.
Avoid repeatedly issuing power commands while ownership is uncertain. A command could reach a different physical device. Also avoid an address sweep during a public show unless the venue approves the test and its impact.
Repair the allocation process
The immediate correction is incomplete until the DHCP scope and static register agree. RFC 2131 describes server allocation behavior, which cannot prevent an independently configured host from claiming a conflicting address. Exclude manual infrastructure addresses from dynamic pools and retire obsolete reservations when hardware is replaced.
If two adapters were cloned or share an unexpected identifier, examine their actual DHCP requests and vendor documentation before creating new reservations. Simply changing the visible device name does not necessarily change the identifier used for allocation.
Accept the repair when the correct physical endpoint answers through repeated restart and lease tests, no other claimant appears during the agreed observation period, and the controller's actual status response matches the equipment label. Keep the old and new mappings in the service record. A short clean test lowers uncertainty but cannot establish that a disconnected duplicate will never return.
Add the result to the AV commissioning checklist. For a channel deployment, agree who owns the address register before scaling the design to additional venues.
