HTTP Device Control Status Codes: Read More Than 200 OK

Distinguish HTTP success, authentication, invalid requests and asynchronous device work, then validate the returned body and actual state.

SoftControl Editorial TeamPublished Updated

Interpret an HTTP device-control response in three stages: status code, documented response body and observed device state. A successful HTTP transaction does not automatically prove that a projector finished starting or that a relay-operated mechanism completed its movement. Use the API's own completion semantics.

This separation produces clearer support messages. An authentication challenge, an invalid parameter and a device still warming should not all appear as the same failed button press.

Build a response decision table

RFC 9110 defines HTTP status semantics. The equipment API determines which responses its endpoints use and how their bodies describe device state. In particular, an accepted asynchronous operation is different from completed work.

Response categoryFirst interpretationIntegration response
Successful documented resultRequest processed as described by APIParse body and verify required state
Authentication challengeCredentials or authentication exchange neededFollow supported scheme
Invalid requestMethod, path, body or parameter problemCorrect request before retrying
Conflict or temporary state restrictionDevice cannot perform this operation nowInspect state and API guidance
Server or gateway problemService-side or routed failureLog context and use bounded recovery

Do not hard-code the table as an exhaustive list of every device's responses.

Use the actual API contract

The Panasonic Projector and Display Web API documents individual power and input endpoints, their JSON fields and possible HTTP responses. It also instructs clients to wait for and confirm a response before sending another command. Those are API-specific requirements, not properties of every HTTP controller.

Read the body according to its content type and schema. A page of HTML from a reverse proxy is not the JSON device response your parser expected, even if a superficial network test says the server answered. Record a bounded, sanitized sample when diagnosing unexpected content.

Check the base URL and API version. A path that exists in a newer manual can produce Not Found on older firmware. Repeated authentication attempts will not repair a version mismatch.

Distinguish transport, protocol and process failure

Failure to establish a connection is different from receiving an HTTP error response. A device returning a structured error has supplied useful application evidence. Preserve its error fields rather than discarding them behind a generic network exception.

After a successful state-setting request, query the state needed by the workflow. If the API returns a transitional state, keep the operation pending within the approved deadline. Avoid treating the requested state echoed in a response as independent proof of the physical result unless the contract explicitly defines it that way.

For a lost response, consider whether retrying the operation is safe. Desired-state setters and reset actions can appear beside each other in an API while having very different duplicate effects.

Acceptance cases for an HTTP driver

Test a valid read, valid authorized write, bad credential, wrong path and invalid parameter in a safe environment. Check that the operator or service log identifies each category accurately. Include a response with an unexpected content type using a simulator or controlled proxy.

Then test device warm-up and a connection interruption after a request. Confirm that the UI preserves uncertainty and reconciles state after recovery. Keep the API revision, firmware, request examples and sanitized responses in the commissioning pack.

Make required response fields explicit. If a field disappears or changes type after firmware maintenance, report an incompatible response rather than substituting success. Preserve status, content type and a bounded sanitized body for support. The network and credentials may still work while interpretation has changed. Compare the recorded API version before changing control values, and ensure an unexpected error body cannot update the normal operating-state fields just because it contains familiar names.

The AV control protocol overview explains where HTTP fits. Bring the exact API contract to SoftControl partners before assuming a generic HTTP sender includes schema parsing, authentication and asynchronous completion handling.
