Relay Dry Contact vs Voltage Output: Check the Receiving Input
Distinguish an isolated contact from a powered output or transistor sink, then document ratings, wiring and fail states before connecting AV controls.
A dry contact opens or closes a circuit without supplying its own control voltage. A voltage output actively presents an electrical level, and a transistor output may sink current instead. Match the receiving equipment's documented input requirements before connecting them. Similar terminal labels do not establish electrical compatibility.
For screens, lifts and other AV peripherals, begin with the receiving controller's manual. The AV system usually interfaces with that controller; it should not substitute an improvised relay connection for the manufacturer's motor-control or protection arrangements.
Identify the actual interface type
Extron's contact-input and relay documentation treats input monitoring and relay output control as different port functions. Its named product has specific input voltage behavior. Do not transfer that voltage specification to every connector labelled contact input.
The Extron WC Pro 160 guide also illustrates digital output configurations, including a pull-up and a sinking action used with a contact-closure input. That is a useful warning that a digital output is not necessarily an isolated mechanical contact.
| Interface | What to establish | What not to assume |
|---|---|---|
| Dry relay contact | Contact arrangement and switching rating | That it supplies power |
| Powered logic output | Voltage, polarity and current capability | Compatibility with an unpowered-contact input |
| Open-collector or sinking output | Required reference and pull-up arrangement | Isolation from the controller |
| Receiving contact input | Approved circuit and activation mode | That any external voltage is permitted |
Read both sides of the wiring diagram
Record common, normally open and normally closed terminals where present. Define which electrical condition means active. A normally closed arrangement can invert the apparent logic, so a software label such as On is insufficient documentation.
Check the load's voltage and current requirements against the output's documented ratings, including any restrictions for the load type. A contact rating is not an instruction to switch mains wiring directly. Use manufacturer-approved interfaces and qualified installation practice for the actual circuit.
Keep signal reference and protective earth distinct in the drawing. A transistor output may require a common reference; an isolated relay may not. Determine the correct arrangement from the equipment documentation instead of adding ground connections by trial and error.
Define the failure state
Decide what should happen when the AV controller loses power, the relay device reboots or communication stops. A relay's de-energized state can differ from the last commanded software state. Record the resulting condition at the receiving input.
For equipment with separate up and down inputs, follow its controller's interlock requirements. Do not allow conflicting outputs simply because the AV interface has independent buttons. This guide is about signal compatibility, not certification of movement control.
Commission without guessing at live terminals
With the equipment isolated as required by its instructions, verify wiring and contact behavior using suitable instruments. Confirm the expected open and closed states before connecting the receiving input. Never use a resistance measurement on an energized circuit.
Then run an authorized functional test through the receiving controller. Observe the actual result and any available feedback. A relay-device status report may describe its own output state, not completion of the connected equipment's action.
Deliver a terminal-level wiring schedule with the configuration. State the inactive condition and receiving input interpretation so future staff can distinguish software inversion from normally closed wiring. If a new gateway uses another output technology, repeat the compatibility review instead of transferring wires by position. The same button label can conceal a different circuit. Record approved ratings and isolation boundaries alongside terminal numbers so replacements can be assessed without opening the entire project history.
Document terminal numbers, output type, ratings, pulse or maintained behavior and recovery after power loss. The AV protocol overview explains how such interfaces fit alongside network control. Bring both equipment manuals to an integration review before specifying a relay gateway or reusable control profile.
