Investigate USB Serial Failures After Idle on an AV PC

Test adapter resume, hub power and driver behavior after idle while preserving Windows selective suspend defaults unless a supported exception is demonstrated.

SoftControl Editorial TeamPublished Updated

When USB serial control fails only after idle, test resume behavior on the actual adapter, driver and hub before changing Windows power settings. Keep selective suspend enabled by default and investigate the failing device specifically. A blanket instruction to disable every USB power feature can hide driver or power problems and create an unsupported long term configuration.

Confirm the idle pattern

Record the last successful request, the idle duration and the first failed request. Check whether the COM port disappears, remains present but cannot open, or opens without receiving data. These are different symptoms. Also note whether unplugging and reconnecting the adapter restores operation and whether the application must restart.

Microsoft's selective suspend guidance describes individual USB port suspension and recommends against disabling the feature. Its USB serial driver reference identifies power management support in the in box compatible driver. Neither source guarantees correct behavior for every third party adapter or hub.

Preserve the original baseline

Record the adapter's hardware identity, driver provider and version, USB socket, hub model and power supply. Save the current power plan. Use the powercfg documentation to inspect available power information without assuming every platform exposes identical controls.

Do not begin by changing the COM number. A new assignment can make the application reopen a device and appear to fix the failure while leaving the idle problem intact. Keep the physical and logical mappings constant during the comparison.

Run a controlled resume test

  • Open the intended port with one approved application and send a safe status query.

  • Leave the system idle longer than the interval that reproduced the incident.

  • Send the same request and record the first reply or error.

  • Close and reopen the serial session through the application's supported controls.

  • Repeat with the adapter directly attached to an approved PC socket if the original path used a hub.

  • Compare a supported driver version or replacement adapter on a bench system where necessary.

Keep system sleep separate from peripheral idle. If the whole computer slept, test the documented wake and application recovery path as well. A failed resume after system sleep does not uniquely identify selective suspend as the cause.

Escalate with reproducible evidence

Provide the adapter vendor with the Windows build, driver version, hub topology, idle interval and exact port behavior. Prefer a vendor supported driver correction, hardware replacement or documented device specific setting over a broad power policy change. If a supported temporary exception is tested, record its scope, rollback and reason, then repeat the full operating cycle.

Do not use constant command traffic solely to prevent idle without considering endpoint polling limits. Artificial activity may conceal the defect and create unnecessary serial load. A health check should have a defined operational purpose and supported interval.

Accept the correction when repeated realistic idle intervals and required sleep cycles preserve the expected status response, with the original mapping and normal startup. Retain the test result and any exception owner in the handover. Use the serial communication guide for protocol basics and driver selection when the investigation identifies a compatibility problem.
