HDMI-CEC AV Control Limits: Verify Power and Source Behavior
Assess CEC interoperability with the full HDMI chain, control ownership and standby tests before relying on it for unattended room startup.
Use HDMI-CEC only for the functions and equipment combinations you have verified. CEC support on a display and source does not guarantee consistent power, input, volume or recovery behavior across a chain containing switchers and extenders. Test the complete installed path, including standby and local remote use.
CEC can simplify a small system, but its convenience should be weighed against the venue's need for predictable unattended operation and explicit feedback. A control path that depends on the video chain deserves its own acceptance plan.
Read the interoperability limits
The Extron WC Pro 160 guide, in its CEC Control section, says implementations vary by manufacturer and equipment, and does not guarantee interoperability. It also directs users to device documentation and alternative control methods when a required CEC function is unsupported.
| Required function | Test condition | Failure implication |
|---|---|---|
| Power-on | Display in approved overnight standby | Morning startup may need another control path |
| Power-off | All sources and switchers active | Another device may change the expected state |
| Input selection | Multiple connected sources | Automatic source ownership needs agreement |
| Volume or mute | Actual audio routing in use | Display support alone may be insufficient |
| Recovery | HDMI path interrupted and restored | Topology must be relearned or reinitialized |
Treat this as a test worksheet rather than a universal CEC command list.
Establish one control owner
Inventory which devices can issue CEC commands automatically. A source waking, an operator using a remote and an AV controller can all affect power or input behavior. Decide which automatic features remain enabled for the intended workflow.
A symptom such as the display turning back on after Close may be a competing source's action, not failure of the original power-off request. Test each source individually before reconnecting the whole chain. Preserve the approved CEC settings in every device's configuration record.
Do not use a control panel's last command as power feedback. Where reliable state reporting is unavailable, show that limitation honestly and decide whether independent monitoring or another protocol is required.
Test the actual HDMI topology
Keep cable, extender and switcher models in the record. Bench success with a source connected directly to a display does not establish success through the final signal path. A change to an intermediate device can alter the control path even when video still looks correct.
Test the intended source selected, another source selected and a source asleep. Confirm whether the display responds after a long standby interval and after mains restoration. Do not generalize one display's behavior to every model in a fleet.
The Epson EB-PU specification documents other monitoring and control interfaces for its listed models. That is an example of checking documented alternatives when the required function cannot be demonstrated through the chosen path; it does not imply a universal fallback for all equipment.
Define a fallback before handover
If unattended power control is essential, document how staff recover when CEC fails. Options depend on the equipment and can include a supported network or serial interface or an explicit local procedure. Avoid two active automation paths that fight over the same state.
Acceptance should record repeatable startup, shutdown, source selection and recovery with all devices connected. Include local remote changes and controller restart. Keep unsupported functions visible in the commissioning record rather than hiding them behind optimistic button labels.
Record enabled automatic power and source features on every device. After replacing a player, compare settings before blaming the controller. The new source can introduce competing wake behavior while every cable remains unchanged. Include that comparison in the replacement checklist, together with overnight standby through the final chain. Keep a known test source available where practical, so changes in source behavior can be isolated from display or intermediate-device changes during service.
For wider projector-control choices, see the projector integration guide. Bring the full HDMI chain and required control functions to SoftControl partners before choosing a production driver or promising CEC reliability across brands.
