Find Hidden DNS Dependencies in an AV Installation
Audit hostname resolution for controllers, time services and remote support, then distinguish an offline local-control requirement from cloud dependencies.
To find DNS dependencies, list every hostname the installation uses and test each one from the production controller with the intended network services available and unavailable. Local IP commands can work while downloads, certificates, time sources or support tools fail. Define what must operate offline before describing the installation as independent of Internet access.
Make a dependency inventory
Start with controller device destinations, media locations, licence related services, update services and support software. Include a dependency only when configuration, vendor documentation or captured behavior shows it exists. Do not invent a cloud requirement for a local application, and do not assume that one successful offline test proves every feature is independent.
RFC 1034 explains the DNS naming and caching model. A cached answer can allow a short disconnection test to pass even when a cold start still requires resolution. The engineering task is therefore to test the actual startup and recovery workflow, not just unplug an uplink while the system is already running.
| Dependency | Example question | Evidence to retain |
|---|---|---|
| Device hostname | Is it resolved by venue DNS or another method? | Answer and resolver address |
| Network file share | Can startup load required media? | Application result and path |
| Time source | Does its hostname resolve locally? | Time service status |
| Remote support service | What stops without external DNS? | Documented fallback |
Test from the real account and adapter
A maintenance laptop may use a different resolver, suffix or VPN from the controller. Collect the controller's DNS server settings and run a query using an actual configured hostname. The example below uses a documentation name that must be replaced; a failed query against that name says nothing about the venue.
Get-DnsClientServerAddress
Resolve-DnsName controller.example.invalidMicrosoft's Test-NetConnection documentation explains detailed connection results, including name resolution and source selection. Follow resolution with a test of the documented service port. A correct DNS answer does not establish that the service is listening or that authentication succeeds.
Compare three conditions
- With the normal network connected, record answers and exercise the agreed opening sequence.
- During an approved window, remove only external connectivity while preserving local infrastructure.
- Repeat after a controlled restart so required startup dependencies are exercised.
- Separately test loss of the local DNS service if that is part of the resilience requirement.
- Restore services and verify that the application recovers without manual address edits.
Do not clear shared DNS infrastructure caches or change venue resolver settings casually. Where a cold cache comparison is needed, coordinate an isolated test system or an approved client test with the administrator. Record any remaining cache uncertainty in the result.
Choose the right corrective action
If local device names need stable resolution, ask the network owner to maintain appropriate records and address assignments. If an endpoint is intentionally configured by IP, record the replacement procedure instead. A hosts file can create an unmanaged second directory; use it only as a documented, supported exception with a responsible owner.
For external dependencies, decide whether the feature can be deferred, replaced with a local resource, or restored through a managed connection. Do not describe “offline mode” without stating which functions remain available and for how long the test ran.
Accept the design when required local operation succeeds from a cold start under the agreed isolation condition and expected external failures are visible to operators. Reconnect and confirm normal recovery. Record hostname ownership and resolution requirements in the handover alongside the opening and closing sequence.
